How Long Do You Wait?
Concern about the safety of silicone implants produced by a plant in France called Poly Implants Protheses (PIP) has been growing since 2000 when reports started surfacing of ruptures leaking silicone into women’s lymph nodes. This year an anonymous tip lead to the PIP plant finally being shut down and 30,000 women in France being urged to get their PIP implants removed. A decade is a long time from initial warnings to an official recall. How long do you wait for a new product to be on the market before you feel safe using it? Do we even have much choice in the case of products like these (often used by breast cancer survivors for reconstructive surgery) but to put pressure on regulators to do their jobs and hope for the best?
